FOUR STEPS TO RUNNING A PAN CARLO STEP 1 At the start, you have been given for each leg, the Out time for 'Minimum distance' (MD), and the speed to average. This Out time with your car number in minutes added, will give you the time at which you should leave MD. If you are just out to enjoy the drive, at that time leave MD at the new assigned speed. This should give you an error of less than one minute per leg. STEP 2 To improve on your score, do step one plus the following. Using the provided tables, select the 'Time per tenth of a mile' for the assigned speed from MD. At each interval, the navigator informs the driver that another tenth of a mile should have passed. The driver simultaneously checks the odometer, and adjusts their speed to get the required tenth at the required time. This should give you an error of about ten points per leg. For example if leg 1, has a Cast of 40 from MD, the interval is 15/100 minute, or 9 seconds per tenth of a mile. Nine seconds after the time to leave MD, you should be a tenth of a mile down the road. 18 seconds after the time to leave MD, you should be 0.2 miles down the road, and so forth. STEP 3 To further improve your score, you will have to do more calculations. Since your odometer and the Rallyemaster's probably do not exactly agree, you will have to adjust mileages and times to account for the difference. To calculate the odometer correction factor, divide the Official mileage by yours at some convenient point, (such as the end of the Odometer check). The correction factor times the interval used in Step 2 will give you an interval correct for your odometer. For example, if a rallyeists mileage at the Odometer check (11.09) read 11.31, the correction factor would be 0.98. The interval time used after MD is then 14.70 hundredths, instead of 15.0, or 8.82 seconds instead of 9.0. This should give you an error of only a second or two per leg. STEP 4 Now that we have showed you how easy it is to stay on time, a devious rallyemaster just might complicate things by putting a trap or two in the rallye. Those you will have to find yourself. Remember the penalty for going past the location of a MD or CP in the wrong direction, or U-turning is 50 points. Good luck and enjoy the rallye Bill Jonesi
